Athens Human Rights Festival

The 32nd annual Athens Human Rights Festival brings together political activists, musicians and artists in a call for action on human rights issues. It is also a celebration of advances in the area of human rights with live performances and speeches in Downtown Athens.

The real life tragedy that unfolded in the book and movie The Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil took place in Savannah on May 2, 1981.

Originally a book by John Berendt, his dramatization of the story was later made into a movie directed by Clint Eastwood.  The impact of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil on Savannah has been greater than any other book in the city’s history.  Since its publication in January 1994, it has sold more than three million copies in 101 printings, has been translated into twenty-three languages and has brought hundreds of thousands of tourists to Savannah to visit this loveliest of crime scenes.

This decision was made by the Georgia General Assembly after Charles performed the song for them as a symbol of reconciliation after conflict over civil rights issues. With this performance, Charles, who was born in Albany, GA, firmly established the connection between the state of Georgia and “Georgia on My Mind.”

On March 20 1958, Academy Award winning actress Holly Hunter was born in Conyers, Georgia.   Located 30 miles east of Atlanta, Conyers offers quaint streets, unique shopping and delightful eateries.  Stop off at the Conyers Welcome Center located in the old Depot to map out your visit to see the Georgia International Horse Park and the Monastery of the Holy Spirit.

If you make it to Conyers this weekend, check out the East Atlanta Egg Drop on Saturday, March 20th.  30,000 plastic eggs will be dropped from a helicopter onto the steeplechase field at the Georgia International Horse Park.  Visit this 1996 Olympic venue for an egg hunt like no other!

On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low gathered 18 girls to register the first troop of American Girl Guides. The following year, this organization’s name was changed to Girl Scouts. In developing the Girl Scout movement in the United States, Juliette brought girls of all backgrounds into the out-of-doors, giving them the opportunity to develop self-reliance and resourcefulness. She encouraged girls to prepare not only for traditional homemaking, but also for possible future roles as professional women and for active citizenship outside the home. Girl Scouting welcomed girls with disabilities at a time when they were excluded from many other activities. This idea seemed quite natural to Juliette, who never let deafness, back problems or cancer keep her from full participation in life.

From the original 18 girls, Girl Scouts has grown to 3.7 million members and is the largest educational organization for girls in the world.  This weekend take a trip down to Savannah to Celebrate Girl Scout Week and visit the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low.  Now known as the Juliette Gordon Low Girl Scout National Center, or often referred to as the Birthplace, the handsome English Regency house was designated a registered National Historic Landmark in 1965.
